Wet Field Policy Implementation

Important: Wet Field Policy Implementation and Game Postponement

Due to the current inclement weather forecast, the Wet Field Policy is now in effect.

To ensure both player safety and the long-term quality of our sports fields, we are implementing a revised Wet Field Policy. Excessive water significantly reduces turf wear tolerance, leading to soil compaction and damage to grass plants from active play. These factors result in undesirable playing surfaces.

Policy Purpose

This policy aims to protect our sports fields and maintain safe playing surfaces for all age groups. It provides clear guidelines for staff and user groups to determine when a field should be closed, helping to prevent disagreements regarding game forfeitures.

Policy Details

No field is to be used for play within a minimum of 8 hours after rainfall that saturates the field, or if there is any evidence of surface water.

A progressive enforcement system will be utilized:

  • First Infraction: The responsible person (coach/manager) will receive a written reminder of the policy from the City and their organization. If extreme damage occurs, the warning will also outline necessary repairs and associated costs.
  • Second Infraction: The team's coach or official will face a suspension from their organization.
  • Third Infraction: The team's permit for the remainder of the season may be cancelled. We hope to resolve any concerns before reaching this stage.

The Parks Department will endeavor to notify the Permit Department of any field closures by 2:00 PM. In cases where storms begin later in the day, the City may rely on signage and Parks Patrol for communication. Brief showers or cloud bursts are generally not a concern.

Game Postponement Announcement

An official announcement regarding postponed games due to inclement weather will be made by an MLBL official to all team managers no later than 3 PM (Saturday).
